My Qualifications and Experience
I trained initially at Bristol University as a childcare social worker and worked with children and families as such for many years. During that time I also worked as a Family Therapist, having accepted an offer of training while at Bristol University.
While still a social worker I gained an Advanced Certificate in Counselling and began working for Relate, as a member of their Relateen Team, working with young people.
I subsequently undertook and gained a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling, awarded by Bath Spa University. The course was described as integrative and I learned many different disciplines. These included psychodynamic and Person Centred. I have since done some training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
As I gained experience I have decided that what works best for my clients is a Person Centred approach and the latest research seems to back this up.
What Is Person Centred Therapy ?
My work is based on the Person Centred Therapy of Carl Rogers. He discovered after many years of practice as a therapist that it did not seem to matter what school of psychotherapy a therapist practiced. What did matter and what got results was the style and personality of the counsellor and the relationship formed between client and counsellor.
A good therapeutic alliance is vital and this is achieved if the therapist strives to offer three core conditions. These conditions are empathy, congruence and unconditional acceptance.
The Person Centred therapist does not offer a quick fix or instant solutions but helps the client find their own way through problems. It has been shown that talking through difficulties with someone trained to listen in a certain way enables the client to grow and develop and lead a more satisfying and less troubled life.
Sometimes one or two sessions may be enough for a client to gain relief. More often something like six to twelve can aid enlightenment, fulfilment and growth.
From £45 per session
